Football Artificial Turf Maintenance: Daily to Seasonal Plan

Football Artificial Turf Maintenance: Daily to Seasonal Plan

Artificial football turf is not maintenance free. Player traffic, dust, debris, infill movement and fibre compaction gradually affect appearance, ball behaviour and user safety. Maintenance should begin when the pitch is handed over and follow the installed system’s technical guidance.

Practical summary: regular inspection, debris removal, appropriate brushing, seam and line checks, even infill distribution and written service records form the maintenance baseline.

Daily or pre-use checks

  • Remove glass, stones, wire, chewing gum and surface debris.
  • Check high-use areas such as goal mouths, penalty spots and entrances.
  • Inspect goals, anchors and mobile equipment that could damage the surface.
  • Record standing water, settlement or a noticeable change in ball movement.

Weekly service based on usage

Lift fibres and redistribute infill using a brush approved for the turf system. An aggressive brush, excessive speed or tight machine turns can stress fibres and seams. Vary brushing direction on heavily used pitches instead of loading the surface in one repeated direction.

Monthly and seasonal inspection

  • Check roll seams, white lines and previous repairs.
  • Measure and redistribute infill to the system specification.
  • Clear drainage routes and pitch edges.
  • Record uneven areas that need specialist attention.

When specialist repair is needed

Opening seams, tears, sub-base settlement, persistent standing water, severe infill loss or a clear change in surface uniformity should be assessed by the installer or a specialist contractor. Poor temporary repairs may affect both performance and warranty conditions.

Handover checklist

  1. Obtain written maintenance guidance and the approved equipment list.
  2. Record turf type, infill, adhesive and seam layout.
  3. Assign responsibility for inspection records.
  4. Plan periodic servicing as part of the operating budget.
